A little about Freemasonry in 2011
As part of my role in the Province of Surrey, I have met hundreds of English Masons from hundreds of Lodges in the past six months with the purpose of discovering why they enjoy Freemasonry.
The most common answer is social: fun with friends, a good meal with like-minded people, teamwork, an expanded social network. A sense of belonging that is an extension of how they felt as a Scout or in the military or emergency services.
This social inclusion crosses all social, religious and geographic borders.
"Freemasonry continues to be one place where two men, whose beliefs would see them in opposite trenches on a field of battle, can come together as Brothers, and work in harmony." S. Davids
Some love the challenge and personal growth, the history, the colourful rituals, and a tie with the traditions of the past - as English Freemasonry approaches the beginning of it's fourth century.
There is no doubt that Freemasonry takes some time and costs some money, but these small investments return life-long friendships and a feeling of belonging to something fundamentally good.
As the world's most successful fraternal society, all we want is a few more 'Men of Quality' to join us as new Brothers. Are you interested?
These reflect personal views, not those of UGLE or any other Masonic body.
